Climate emergency? What climate emergency?

Climate emergency? What climate emergency?

On Tuesday morning, 21st July, in a meeting starting at 10 am in Shire Hall, Warwick, the Reform leadership at Warwickshire County Council is trying to reverse the Council’s own 2019 declaration of a climate emergency, and to roll back existing council action on the climate emergency.

Although this might seem like a symbolic gesture, it is important, as it will affect policy decisions going forward. This could well have an impact on Active Travel measures, including provision for cycling.

The timing is ironic, as we bake under the 3rd official heatwave of the year. The idea that we can’t afford measures to tackle climate change simply ignores the enormous future costs of doing nothing now.

In a rather contradictory gesture, the motion under debate will suggest setting up “an Environment and Flood Resilience cross-party Members Working Group…”

The Warwickshire Climate Alliance is urging people to attend a peaceful protest before the meeting, on the steps of the Council offices at Shire Hall, Market Place, Warwick CV34 4RL. The protest will be from 9:15am on Tuesday 21st July. You are asked to bring a placard!

If this is an issue that concerns you, please come to the protest if you can. At the very least, please write to your local County councillor over the weekend to make your views known.
