Minutes for April 2019 Cycleways Meeting

10th April 2019 – Fat Pug, Leamington Spa

  • Report from the quarterly Warwickshire Cycle Forum Meeting – 9th April
    • Cllr Holland raised the issue of cyclists riding on the pavement which can turn people against cyclists.
    • The new cycle link connecting Warwick Racecourse, Hampton Street and Hampton Road will not be signposted by Warwick District Council until all security features at the racecourse have been completed.
    • Network Rail thinks that the bricked-up arch which forms part of the Cape Road railway bridge could not be incorporated within any cycle route connecting Warwick Station to Ansell Way because the brickwork is required structurally.
    • Improvements to the tunnel under the A46 which enables cycling between the town of Warwick and Warwick Parkway station could be paid from the Stanks Island project fund.
    • The County Council thinks it may not be able to receive enough money from the HS2 Communities and Environment Fund for the section of K2L from Bericote Roundabout (Ramada Hotel) northwards to Thickthorn Roundabout (A46 junction.) It estimates that a 140-metre-long temporary bridge over the Avon is required to withstand flood risk and that that and the widening of the road would cost £1.5 million.
    • The civil engineering works being undertaken as part of the HS2 project are affecting some existing routes used by cyclists. Council officer will be talking to the WCC HS2 team to look for solutions.
    • Cllr Gifford and fellow councillors from neighbouring county electoral divisions have used delegated budget funds to pay for cycling route signage in north Leamington.
    • The County Council will be using West Midlands Cycle Design Guidance published by Transport for the West Midlands as an overarching guide for schemes within Warwickshire.
    • The council is looking at how to incorporate cycling along Harbury Lane as part of a Gaydon-Leamington cycle route which will help alleviate traffic to and from the Jaguar Land Rover site at Gaydon.
    • WCC’s Road Safety team is to take a look at the situation for cyclists along Stratford Road in Warwick.
    • A Cycleways member from Kenilworth, will submit the results of the Kenilworth cycling survey.

  • W2L cycle route – Once widths at key points along the route have been measured Cycleways can organise a ride along the route to assess the viability of the various proposed designs at those key points.

  • Cycleways will contact council for details of the proposed cycle route that will accompany the widening of Europa Way, especially the sections of the route which will be designed by housing developers.
